Koen van Ginneken is helming the activities related to agriculture of Neterland embassy in Hungary, Serbia, Austria and Montenegro and is based in Budapest. Together with the team, he is furthering sustainable economic cooperation in the agrifood sector between Dutch stakeholders and their counterparts in the region and functions as the liaison for government relation in the sphere of agriculture, nature and food quality. Koen holds an undergraduate degree in European law from the University of Maastricht and postgraduate degrees in international law and public policy from the University of Maastricht and the University of Cambridge respectively. Previously, Koen was posted at the Netherlands Permanent Representation to the EU as attaché for energy and later, for agriculture.

Scientific research activities and areas of professional engagement are related to the quality and safety of animal feed, application of analytical methods for the determination of toxic substances, as well as the use of edible insects as animal feed materials. As part of the multidisciplinary team, he involved in the activities of establishing facility for mass farming of Tenebrio molitor (yellow mealworm) insect species, working on the development of the technology for processing insect larvae into insect meal, as well as testing insects as food ingredient in poultry nutrition.

Naučnoistraživačka delatnost i oblasti stručnog angažovanja odnose se na kvalitet i zdravstvenu bezbednost hrane za životinje, primenu analitičkih metoda za određivanje toksičnih materija, kao i upotrebu jestivih insekata kao sastojka hrane za životinje. Kao deo multidisciplinarnog tima, uključen je u aktivnosti na uspostavljanju farme za masovni uzgoj insekatske vrste Tenebrio molitor (veliki brašnar), radi na razvoju tehnologije prerade larvi    insekata u insekatsko brašno, kao i na ispitivanju insekata kao sastojka hrane u ishrani živine.

He completed animal science studies at the Faculty of Agriculture Novi Sad in 1993. Worked in the animal feed industry as a nutritionist, technologist and plant manager. Since 2016, He has been working at the Ravago Chemicals premix plant as a nutritionist – technologist. Among other things, I provide technical support to our clients in thermic processing technologies - pelletizing and extruding (especially for aqua and pet industry).

Insect Larvae as Protein Source

As the global demand for protein continues to rise, finding sustainable and efficient sources becomes crucial. Insect larvae have gained attention as a promising alternative protein source due to their high nutritional value, low environmental impact, and potential for large-scale production. Insect larvae are rich in essential nutrients, making them a valuable protein source. They contain high-quality proteins with all essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and beneficial fats. Additionally, insect larvae are rich in micronutrients like iron and calcium, which are often lacking in traditional protein sources. Incorporating insect larvae into diets can provide a well-rounded nutritional profile. Compared to conventional crop production production of plant protein, rearing insect larvae requires significantly fewer resources and has a lower environmental impact. Insect larvae have a high feed conversion efficiency, meaning they can convert feed into body mass effectively. They require less land, water, and feed to produce the same amount of protein, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, land degradation, and water usage. Insect larvae have the advantage of rapid growth and high reproduction rates. They can be reared in controlled environments, such as vertical farms or automated systems, allowing for year-round production. Moreover, larvae can be fed on organic waste streams, reducing the burden on waste management systems. This efficient use of resources makes insect larvae a scalable and sustainable solution to meet the growing protein demand. Insect larvae offer a wide range of applications in the food industry. They can be processed into various forms, such as powder, oil, or whole larvae, and incorporated into existing food products or used as a standalone ingredient. 

Insect larvae have emerged as a sustainable and efficient protein source that addresses the challenges of global food security and environmental sustainability. With their high nutritional value, low environmental impact, and scalability, insect larvae offer a viable solution to meet the increasing demand for protein. Continued research, innovation, and awareness will contribute to the wider acceptance and integration of insect larvae into diets, promoting a more sustainable and resilient food system.

Great strides have been made in Serbia on this issue. The research team "Worm Craft" from the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad, at the Research centar "Agro Campus" made a pioneering venture by establishing a facility for breeding insects (Tenebrio molitor). The insect larvae that are produced are used for the purposes of testing mealworm nutritional properties and the possibility of implementation in meals for animal nutrition.

Какао globalna potražnja za proteinima rastu, pronalaženje održivih i efikasnih izvora postaje ključno pitanje. Larve insekata su privukle pažnju kao obećavajući alternativni izvor proteina zbog svoje visoke nutritivne vrednosti, malog uticaja na životnu sredinu i potencijala za proizvodnju velikih razmera. Larve insekata su bogate esencijalnim hranljivim materijama, što ih čini vrednim izvorom proteina. Sadrže visokokvalitetne proteine sa svim esencijalnim aminokiselinama, vitaminima, mineralima i korisnim mastima. Pored toga, larve insekata su bogate mikro i makro elementima  poput gvožđa i kalcijuma, koji često nedostaju u tradicionalnim izvorima proteina. Uključivanje larvi insekata u ishranu može da obezbedi dobro zaokružen nutritivni profil. U poređenju sa konvencionalnom proizvodnjom biljnih proteina, uzgoj larvi insekata zahteva znatno manje resursa i ima manji uticaj na životnu sredinu. Larve insekata imaju visoku efikasnost konverzije hrane, što znači da mogu da pretvore hranu u telesnu masu. Potrebno im je manje zemlje, vode i hrane za proizvodnju iste količine proteina, smanjujući emisije gasova staklene bašte, degradaciju zemljišta i upotrebu vode. Larve insekata imaju prednost brzog rasta i visoke stope reprodukcije. Mogu se uzgajati u kontrolisanim okruženjima, kao što su vertikalne farme ili automatizovani sistemi, što omogućava proizvodnju tokom cele godine. Štaviše, larve se mogu hraniti tokovima organskog otpada, smanjujući opterećenje sistema za upravljanje otpadom. Ova efikasna upotreba resursa čini larve insekata skalabilnim i održivim rešenjem za zadovoljenje rastuće potražnje za proteinima. Larve insekata nude širok spektar primene u prehrambenoj industriji. Mogu se prerađivati u različite oblike, kao što su prah, ulje ili cele larve, i ugraditi u postojeće prehrambene proizvode ili koristiti kao samostalni sastojak. 

Larve insekata su se pojavile kao održiv i efikasan izvor proteina koji se bavi izazovima globalne bezbednosti hrane i održivosti životne sredine. Sa svojom visokom nutritivnom vrednošću, malim uticajem na životnu sredinu i skalabilnošću, larve insekata nude održivo rešenje za zadovoljenje sve veće potražnje za proteinima. Kontinuirano istraživanje, inovacije i podiyanje svesti trebalo bi da doprineu širem prihvatanju i integraciji larvi insekata u ishranu, promovišući održiviji i otporniji sistem ishrane.

U Srbiji su napravljeni veliki pomaci po ovom pitanju. Istraživački tim „Worm Craft” sa Poljoprivrednog fakulteta u Novom Sadu napravio je pionirski poduhvat osnivanjem objekta za uzgoj insekata (Tenebrio molitor) u Istraživačkom centru „Agro Campus”. Proizvedene larve insekata koriste se za ispitivanje njihovih nutritivnih svojstava i mogućnosti uvođenja u obroke za ishranu životinja
