Organic Animal Production.
Organic production of livestock products in Serbia is developing and becoming increasingly important in the agricultural sector. Organic production refers to raising animals and producing food for them in a way that respects ecological principles, without the use of artificial chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or antibiotics.
In Serbia, there are farms that specialize in organic production of milk, meat, eggs, and other animal products. These farms must be certified by accredited organizations that conduct control and verification to ensure compliance with organic production standards.
The advantages of organic production of animal products include several benefits:
Health benefits: Organic products are produced without the use of chemical substances that can remain present in animal feed. This results in products that are free from pesticide residues, antibiotics, and other harmful substances.Animal welfare: Organic production emphasizes animal welfare by providing animals with ample space to move freely, access to outdoor areas, and natural nutrition.
Environmental protection: Organic production reduces the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, thereby protecting soil, water, and biodiversity.
Increased consumer awareness: There is growing awareness among consumers regarding the importance of healthy food and environmental protection, leading to an increasing demand for organic products.
However, organic production of animal products in Serbia is not as widespread as conventional production, which still dominates the market.
When comparing Serbia and the EU in terms of organic production, the circumstances are as follows:
The EU has the largest organic farming area in the world, with over 13 million hectares dedicated to organic production. In contrast, Serbia's organic farming area is smaller but steadily growing. Currently, approximately 44,000 hectares are used for organic production.
Regarding the number of organic farms, the EU has a significant number, with around 319,000 organic farms recorded in 2019 across member states. In Serbia, the number of organic farms is also increasing, but exact data may vary. The latest available information indicates that there are over 1,500 registered organic farms in Serbia.
In terms of organic certification, organic production in the EU is subject to strict regulations and requires certification by authorized bodies. The EU organic logo is used to indicate compliance with EU organic standards. In Serbia, organic production is regulated by the Law on Organic Production, and farms must obtain certification from authorized bodies to label their products as organic.
Regarding market demand and consumption, the EU represents a significant market for organic products, with a growing consumer demand. The organic market in the EU has been experiencing steady growth in recent years. In Serbia, consumer demand for organic products is also increasing, although the market is still in its early stages of development. Domestic consumption of organic products is growing, and there is potential for export to EU markets.
Support and financing for organic production in the EU are provided through various forms, including subsidies, research programs, and promotional campaigns. Similarly, the Serbian government implements support measures such as subsidies for organic farms, financial incentives, and capacity-building programs.
To further develop organic production of livestock in Serbia, it is necessary to invest in farmer education, receive state support in the establishment and implementation of adequate regulations and standards, and promote organic products among consumers.
Podrška i finansiranje organske proizvodnje u EU realizuje se kroz različite oblike podrške i finansiranja radi promocije organske poljoprivrede, uključujući subvencije, istraživačke programe i promotivne kampanje.
